Mettā Creative Labs Part 3: The End or The Beginning?

In our final rendition of Mettā Creative Labs (MCL), an all-day Saturday event in Baltimore City, people from all walks of life gathered at Creative Labs one last time to celebrate community, respect, music, diversity, love, and of course, the start of summer!

What I love the most about Mettā events is the community. This held exceptionally true during MCL part 3. Both old faces and new, I was able to get to know people on a deeper level than I do at any ol’ normal event. Want to know why? Because we, the Mettā Family, showed up not just to be together, but to learn and explore. Through novel experiences and workshops, we become little kids again, with our minds wide open, taking in new information and stretching our version of normality.

Even the co-creator of Mettā, Dylan Nunn, agreed: “I don’t know what else to say! It gave me the butterflies I used to have in gym class, or the butterflies you so easily forget when you get into routines. That’s what the African Dance Workshop gave me! I was pushed out of my comfort zone, and everyone was watching you dance, but everyone was laughing and smiling too! Learning these moves was so incredible!” It’s moments like these, when we remember our gut-aching laugh from when we were little, the one where you are gasping for even the smallest inhale of breath, that impact us even more as adults.

Workshops on the hour, art all around, and who could forget the music? No matter what, there was always amazing sounds going on underground. The stage was set somewhere in between Alice’s Wonderland and a very scary haunted house. Looking to your right as you enter, you could launch a babydoll’s head into a bucket for 10 points, and then just a flash in your peripheral makes you gaze at the projection mapping visuals. It felt like every sense in my body was captivated throughout the night – whether it be sight, sound, or smell (don’t forget about that Cacao!). These musical artists really brought their A game, as they swayed the crowd with every note, every lyric, and every thoughtfully curated melody. Each made sure, in their own unique way, that the crowd was having a good fricken time. At the peak of the night, when all our brains were full of novel information, new friends surrounded us, we got to hear some pretty incredible music. Who could forget the Skrillex throwback the dj Knoimnot gifted us? Or the body-wobbling bass sounds that So lGood treated us to? To me, music is therapy. And the artists closed out our event with some good vibrations.

Mettā events are something special, but Mettā Creative AND Creative Labs together, well that’s just a match made in heaven. All in all, I’d say this was the perfect way to start Summer 2019. This gathering put me in a mindset where I am ready for fun, challenges, new experiences, and more than anything ready to explore and learn with my Mettā Family. If you managed to miss MCL pt. 3, don’t fret. There will always be more gatherings.

I hope you all have a lovely summer, and I cannot wait to experience our beautiful community again, in the Backyard, where we’ll give a proper farewell to this wonderful season. See you all October 3-6 2019.

Much love,

Nathalie Werebe :)
